Unlikable protagonist with a weak and poorly developed supporting cast. Movie attempts to evoke empathy from the viewer for the main protagonist but fails miserably imo. Movie is full of 2 minute periods of different shots of food, cities, kitchens which speed along development in the plot but leave a lot desired for the viewer. Enjoyable to think about the lifestyle of chefs in Michelin restaurants, but that element of the plot is one of the few entertaining and well done aspects of this film.
Thoroughly enjoyed the film. The hanks-DiCaprio dynamic is great; the DiCaprio-Walker dynamic did not land for me though. Transitions in the film were a tad clunky. Film opened as a frame narrative with the television but that frame never closed unless I missed something. Elite cast (I’m a big fan of Martin sheen). Score is a combination of heist/jazz which I enjoyed. Overall, very entertaining and strong performances mostly (I always desire a little more from DiCaprio).
Beautifully shot. Paul Newman is a wonderful butch cassidy and Redford is an arguably better Sundance Kid. Love the development of “who are those guys” with the duo even thinking Lefors is in Bolivia. Movie stalls somewhat after their journey to Bolivia but ends with a powerful closing scene.
Strong performances by Streep and Hathaway. The supporting characters lack depth and proper development and most solely function as a means of advancing Streep/Hathaway’s development. More to be desired from the dialogue (some quite predictable lines alongside a lack of self awareness). Despite its flaws, the film is entertaining and rightfully characterized as a “feel good.” I think when watching movies/approaching any art, one must think about purpose, and this film achieves its purpose (or at least the one that I am projecting as a viewer which is equally if not more valid than the director/screenwriter/author of the og book’s purpose)
