Wicked Little Letters 2023
A decent comedy and a decent drama, which combined don't really work that well together. I feel someone like Martin McDonagh could make this work, with the wild tonal whiplash between depressing true-life drama and crass, scatological comedy. But the two tones are far too disparate here. Regardless, it is often pretty funny, with typically great performances from Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley, and the story it tells is fascinatingly odd, yet loaded with commentary about the historical suppression of women. Just wish the film was a bit more cohesive overall.

The Eyes of My Mother 2016
Grrrr. This is the kind of shit that gives arthouse horror a bad name. Except it apparently doesn't, because everyone seems to inexplicably love it. I've seen non-stop praise for how disturbing and horrific and nightmarish it is. No. It is none of those things. You want horror that actually feels evil? Watch Kill List or I Saw the Devil. The Eyes of My Mother feels like a short film stretched out for 75 tedious boredom-filled minutes.
Making the film…
