    The timid camera movement and wide lens give this light and airy feel which neatly places this as a ghost story but not a horror film which would usually try to close in and suffocate you. Even the supposed climax is restrained and the film continues at its gentle pace until a well-earned, final shivering moment closes things off.

    I enjoyed this a lot. Rather than fear and tension it works to evoke a vague sadness.

    Perhaps the book this is adapted from doesn't have this issue but the central conflict of the movie - that our main character has no alibi - isn't even true in this telling of the story! All the witnesses say they saw him, the presence of the lady (and her hat) is immaterial so why all the fuss, he was there so he couldn't have done the murder!

    I liked the weird jazz drumming scene though.
