What started as a potential analysis of the American diaspora and a criticism of the American welfare system in the guise of the horror film very quickly devolved into a religious mess.
While most horror movies end with a successful exorcism that praises the name of the Lord, this one managed to make that look hilarious. The circumstances were way to convinient - the script treats the audience like we're dumb.
