Another important work by PTA. Now, I have come to the realization that to discuss Anderson, you need to look at this works as a whole.

Freddie Quell is Dirk Diggler when he left the industry. Like John of Hard Eight, he is without a purpose. Quell is filled with beastly desires. When he joins Dodd's cult, he gets a sense of belonging. Dodd is like a charlatan, someone similar to Eli of TWBB, who uses his alleged mystic power…

This is the first Hou Hsiao-Hsien film I have watched, and what an experience it has been. Such a transcendental movie, film as pure art!

The Time to Live and the Time to Die is a semi-autobiographical movie about the director's life, after their family shifted to Taiwan from the mainland in 1947. It spans from his childhood to his adulthood, from the time he was a student to a time he leads some gangs. The pictures are beautiful and moving, especially the scenes following the family members' death when we see him cry.

Looking forward to deep dive into Hou's filmography.

One of my favourite Martin Scorsese films. 3 hours of pure enjoyment. Leo is at his career best performance. There were so many funny dialogues.
