Sweat it out. Confessional healing. Visions of smoke feel like transcendent interludes in this intimate and vulnerable portrayal of communal womanhood. Chanting awakens primal emotions while leaves of the forest beat out demons, adding their rough, massaging texture as counterpoint to the ethereal steam emanating from the native rocks. Witchy hissing makes the paranormal feel intuitively real. My only real complaint was that the subtitles distracted from the beauty of the shots, but of course there’s really no way around that. Culturally essential and authentically human, this one reminds us what catharsis feels like in the context of same-sex camaraderie.
Moore made this free on his YouTube after the CEO shooting. I had seen Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11, so I knew to expect his signature sassiness and confrontational approach. Honestly, this one has aged really well considering these problems still exist in healthcare and insurance. Of course, Mangione gave Moore a shout out in the “manifesto,” as news outlets have been calling it. The only real question is: how can this fucked up system change? In the meantime, I’ll just focus on preventive care, I guess.
