  Puzzling. I didn’t like the ending. I am still processing the major themes of this work.  It does leave a lasting first impression. Biller comments on beauty, abuse, love, sexuality, femininity, and spirituality through the playfully duplicitous protagonist Elaine Parker. Perhaps protagonist is the wrong word.   Cliché film sequences involving demonic possession. The performances were inspired at times. Especially that if Crowe in the role of the primary protagonist Father Gabriel’s Amorth. The reasoning behind the possession aren’t convincing. At one point the demon gives a throwaway line explaining that « innocent flesh is fun to ruin » but this feels more like the writers trying to excuse their story’s shaky foundation rather than build a proper one using visual storytelling and proper inciting actions.
