The Urban Crisis and the New Militants: Module 6 - Black Moderates and Black Militants

    ★★★★

wish this was longer - they were just starting to scratch the surface of how it’s impossible to have a strong analysis on race and the eradication of racism without discussing it in tandem with the end of capitalism.

    God's Country

I really didn’t appreciate Thandie Newton’s performance enough the first time around.

Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told

    ★★

was this a doc about Freaknik or Atlanta celebrities? while I appreciated the (too short) segment about the inception of Freaknic, this doc feels so narratively divorced from its subject matter that it almost doesn’t make sense. it was a bizarre choice to romanticize Freaknik as this southern utopia of sexual liberation, autonomy and consent, while very quickly sliding in a 5 min segment about 1 of the many sexual assaults that took place during the festivities. interviewing celebrities instead…

  • Donyale Luna: Supermodel

    Donyale Luna: Supermodel

    ★★★½

almost posited as some sort of urban legend, the doc tells the fascinating, yet sobering story of the pioneering supermodel, Donyale Luna. The first Black supermodel to grace the cover of Vogue, it was interesting to see the story shaped wholly around the white gaze; whether she was experiencing racism within the insular, homogenous fashion industry or being lauded and fawned over for her otherworldly beauty, Donyale Luna’s existence was always reduced to spectacle. This somewhat insidious fetishization not only shaped Donyale’s own identity but also led to her unfortunate and untimely demise.
