Overall I liked it, but would've preferred if they focused more on the scientific, physiological, psychological, or even historical and cultural aspects of "competitive apnea" sports such as freediving instead of leaning heavily on the dramatization of one emotional storyline.
Ambient, immersive, webcam-like, surreal, mystic, intimate, grating, suffering, searching and release. It gave me a sense of being a hovering spirit having great distance from a physical form. And not knowing what was going on for the full length of the film did not detract from the unsettling pleasure of its unresolved mystery. Best experienced in a theater.
It's crazy to think about how we used to leave the house as kids and come back hours later, no phone no nothing. This movie reminded me about how hard emotionally it was to be a kid. No money, no agency, no control, no words or skills to cope with big feelings... somewhat left to figure it out ourselves. It was also cool to watch two Joan Chen movies in a row, 10 years of her career apart.
My friend Greg said this was more about tennis than it was about sex.
