This film, to my mind, is probably the most detailed, sensitive and engaging portrayal of erotica. A first hand approach to passion, infidelity, bisexuality, or… long story short: Lust.
It’s admirable how a married woman of the 1920s had the courage to narrate such graphic - and for many “perverse” - stories in a time of sexism. She knew sharing her intimate desires would cause huge controversy coming from a woman, but still, she didn’t hesitate to publish her carnal fantasies, which years later paved the way for an era of fewer taboos, specially for women.
The help is a drama film set in the small town of Mississippi in the 1960’s. Emma Stone plays the title role as Skeeter, a young woman and aspiring journalist who is planning to write a controversial book that recounts the true stories about the racial discrimination that black women suffer through this era. Viola Davis is Aibileen Clark, a black woman who ends up becoming close to the main character and tells her the struggles that women of color…
A surely emotional movie, specially for the female audience, where it is depicted the struggles a young woman has to deal with when her irresponsible, but yet passionate, mother is sent to prison. The protagonist, Astrid, is therefore sent to a foster care system where she learns from the violence that surrounds that ambient, and also expects for certain families to adopt her.
