i think the reason people read more queer allegory into this than it had (and it did have some!) is because the movie is visually stunning, well paced and cohesive, but it lacks emotional heart- it presents a classic story of accepting others and yourself despite differences and while being a sea monster is a very fun literal fantasy difference it lacked a more metaphorical, meaningful difference for our main characters to be struggling with, besides a little Fear and a little Class
