Conclave 2024
The film is partly fascinating, in that it’s about a fascinating process - the election of a new Pope -shrouded in secrecy. If this was a documentary, it would likely be excellent. A documentary could build in natural variety simply by being comprised of interviews with lots of different, idiosyncratic real people.
Conclave, though, lacks meaningful texture. Theres a saminess to the tense somber dialogue, theological pontifications and Machiavellian strategizing. Aside from the occasional raised voice, the tone is constant.…

"Nazis are bad." That is all this movie has to say. It thinks it has much more to say, but it doesn't. It thinks it’s about complicity, about normal people doing bad things, but it isn't. It's about bad people doing bad things.

The Substance 2024
The Substance seems to contain two movies. One is a super fun gross out body horror extravaganza. The other is a rumination on and protest of the horrific standards of beauty we impose on women, especially middle-aged women.
The first of these movies is a lot of fun. If you're into that sort of thing. Which I am. The second is interrputed by the first and thus fails to engage in meaningful exploration or even indignation.
