'Notting Hill' is a breezy watch, the stakes are never high and despite Hugh Grant's character Going Through It for most of the runtime the heartbreak is largely stated rather than felt or emoted (excepting the lovely "Ain't No Sunshine" one-take). The main characters' backstories as a series of unconnected scenes at the start of the movie was disconcerting, even more so because I was a bit stoned. On retrospect I think it was a brave choice to open the movie this way, but have also gained some appreciation for the mid-movie flashback.
Actually would flashbacks have even worked for these backstories? It's kind of absurd, we have a Palestinian freedom fighter, an embezzling banker, a hitman & the guy from Jaws as a mafioso wheelman for main characters, it's crazy. It's 'A Mad Mad Mad Mad World' but for thrillers.
