My partner introduced Ponyo early to me in my Studio Ghibli education because he knew that I have a penchant for the small and cute. Otherwise I knew nothing about it! It's not the most beloved in the SG tradition, but perhaps it should be!

Mixed feelings about this.
Beautifully shot, particularly the journey to Everest montage. BUT... there are so many Buts.
But 1) the drama of it felt too much like movie drama, forgetting the fact there were real lives at stake here.
But 2) Not enough respect was shown for the bodies of those who had sadly perished on the mountain. The idea that they were originally going to show those bodies on screen is really repugnant.

I have absolutely no idea why this film is so well regarded, it's the ✨ worst thing ✨ I have ever had the displeasure of watching. It genuinely enrages me that that's two and a half hours I will never see again.
It's slow, dull and derivative. It clearly thinks it's ever so impressive, but in reality there's nothing here that hasn't been done before- and I would argue has been done better (see The Sixth Sense and Alien).
