Had a lot of fun with this at the beginning, but the abusive undertones (overtones?) of the main relationship left a sour taste in my mouth. Beth and JJ’s relationship is a clear and disgusting example of domestic violence, one that drives the events of the movie. But Jackie’s increasing roid rage leads her to be emotionally and physically abusive as well, and yet… given the entirely unearned happy ending, I have a feeling the movie didn’t see the parallel…
It’s feeling. It’s a meditation on experiencing life and feeling the emotion of it. A character that lives so fully, he remembers every patron and every meal he makes. He’s fully immersed in his art. He’s fully immersed in the process. Fully immersed in the pleasure of it.
The way food is an experience that cuts through everyone, the pleasure of tasting and eating. The way the moment is fleeting. The meal is gone. People are gone. Things we love…
