The Namesake novel, and Jhumpa Lahiri’s works in general, tend to be very introverted which makes them difficult to adapt to film. While I adore the book more, the film beautifully captured the relationship between Ashoke and Ashima, and the sense of heavy loneliness which drifts through all of Lahiri’s work.
I agree with Jhumpa when she says “The essence of my book remains very much in the film but inhabits a different realm”
