I didn’t do any research before watching, but this film has to be the origin of the “scream queen.” That’s an aspect that makes it difficult for me to enjoy. There’s an overwhelming amount of loud noises—squealing, screaming, chainsaws—it feels endless in a disturbingly hypnotic way. I have to admit, it all became quite annoying.

The only reason I bumped this up to a 2.5 instead of a 2 was because of the kids’ performances. I was really impressed with how they carried the movie! A modern story told with classic tools and techniques. Even utilizing the viewer’s subconsciously dated typecasting as a tool is excitingly forward-thinking. The textured, oversaturated shots and colors paired beautifully with the skillfully arranged and selected environments. Watching the Lady run through moss-overgrown trees gave an air of Scooby-Dooesque haunted forests. Witnessing it in full texture and in the daylight gave it the necessary comfort/suspense that hit the sweet spot. I can’t forget to comment on the shots as analogous…
