Kaufman's second adaptation after, well, "Adaptation," reconfigures the book's subject matter through his own obsessions with identity and theater. The gender POV shift might irk some, but I feel it's a continuation of Kaufman's own unconscious exploration of queerness and transness -- think Maxine in Being John Malkovich and Caden's transition into Ellen in Synecdoche, New York. The car scenes probably worked better on the page, and came off clunky to me. Plus, I never tolerate Gena Rowlands slander!
