it’s hard to appreciate a Haneke film without the emotional resolve to surrender to a special kind of cruelty. Isabelle Huppert’s Erika will forever be a woman who’ll have a place in my heart: a spinster undone, embittered by inadequacies and quite taken by the illusion of control sought exclusively through perversion, pain, and abjection. no punches pulled. no moral lessons learnt. to be confronted with the ultimate paradox of human condition: to desire is to despair.
