Again (enthusiastically pointing all of my fingers in Valeska Grisebach’s direction, and mentioning her just because I feel a strong need to call her by her name) a glimpse of hope at the foggy horizon of German televisio… ehmmmm cinema’s future.
There is not a lot of pleasantry to be found in this plain, sincere and unironic film. But Pinske’s dry and realist approach to humor is charming as hell without ever blurring the heaviness it bears.

Hard to rate.
It made me laugh quite a bit, I have some sympathy for the symbolic value, for sharing (quite particular but still) bits of (a very particular but still) gay lifestyle in a mainstream comedy as big as this.
But there were some mostly narrative decisions that I don’t agree with, one thing in particular:
One of the first establishing scenes shows the gay club, jokingly comments on being topless as an integral part of gay nightlife, displaying…
The script is very well written, everything that tries to render it as a film falls drastically flat.
This is not a film. This is just text and shot/reverse shot-sequences of faces interrupted by filmic (and that’s already the nature of it) landscapes.
The audience gets brutally dragged through the script in a teleologically constructed series of three-sentence-interactions leaving the story no space to breath or evolve.
Story is a euphemism here as the narrative mainly consists of verbal repetitions…
I can’t quite understand, why of all those wonderful films you could create about this topic and its fascinating human and nonhuman subjects, Sara Dosa chose to make this particular one. Neither does it tell a lot about vulcanos nor does it invest in breaking the surface of that picturesque love story.
Nothing in this film is allowed to erupt, a metaphor the voice-over would speak to superfluously poetize the vulcanologists’ stunning visual archive footage. The director tries to summon…
