Inglourious Basterds if Tarantino respected history.
Honestly though, this is one of the greatest war films ever made, both as a genuinely gripping thriller and a heartbreaking examination of the futility of the French resistance under Nazi occupation. It perfectly toes the line of making you fall in love with this band of resistance members while never romanticising or glorifying what they do.
Also all-time cinematography on this one, the muted colour palette makes everything look like a faded painting, and the effect is both chilling and beautiful.
It's such a shame Jean-Pierre Melville is so underrated outside of France.
