Shockproof had all the right ingredients like the lead who falls for a blond femme fatale, the sleazy criminal and his elaborate plot, and the “I’m not the girl you think I am” archetype heroin that I really thought this was going to deliver a cynical, depressing film noir ending. Though it has a bit too many nods to Scorsese’s King of Comedy & Taxi Driver, and the first act could’ve been paced better, Todd Phillips’ Joker is an assuredly directed, powerfully acted and elegantly shot character study that elevates the genre into new heights.
