the worst thing about this film isn't that it's bad, or that raul julia is dying of stomach cancer, or the dreamlike monotony of introducing every named character, you know, from the videogame; it's that this will always be the most culturally significant and well-remembered film about the breakup of yugoslavia

what if the world is controlled by secret forces? every decision and every tragedy preordained. and there would be in the knowledge of such a life only tragedy, no joy. or perhaps, only joy, which would be more terrible.
this isn't really a film about a breakup because the only character who really exists or has depth is dani, and her attachment to the world is fraught at best. grief or trauma or depression is presented as a painful nullification…
