An enjoyable cold-war spy thriller. The film's vision of underfunded, seat-of-the-pants 70s espionage is very well realised through clever set design - there's a lot to look at and appreciate. The script is economical - only the essentials are explained, leaving you wondering about a few small details and one or two larger ones, depending on how closely you're following. That's mostly a good thing, but I found myself wishing the film would dwell on a couple of key points…

Some great performances in this - everyone's full of energy even when they're playing bored or lazy characters. The dialogue flows brilliantly, with a cast that plays off each other smoothly. Better than I expected! It could have done with a slightly tighter edit - there's one part with characters pulling on ropes and tying them to things that seems to go on forever - but it's got some surprisingly decent effects for a film from 1974. Some surprises in the cast (oh, hi Fred Astair). All the usual stuff you'd expect from a disaster movie, but in a good way.

Like a prototype Bond film. Flawed by today's standards - like most films of this era, it has tortuous and cringey dialog in romance scenes, but also some really interesting direction, a solid cast and expansive sets that draw you in toneqch scene.
