Sort of caught between the original Nosferatu and Eggers' The Witch, between the original's Ellen selflessly sacrificing herself to save society from evil and Thomasin being so thoroughly failed by society she embraces “evil” instead. Sometimes it feels like it tries to cohere in the middle, at something like Chico Buarque’s Geni e o Zepelim, whose selfless sacrifice is probably the right thing to do and yet clearly so much more than society deserves. The Cameraman's Revenge 1912
It's almost absurd how much the very ordinary story of infidelity fits with the weird-as-hell stop-motion animation of dead bugs. The familiarity of the narrative establishes a stable emotional base that is constanly exaggerated by the jerky movements of the bugs. Fantastic.
