Ride Your Wave 2019
I needed a push to rewatch the very same film that had me down on my knees and snivelling like a fool the first time I watched it because I would not willingly subject myself to a crying fit had I had the choice. But honestly, I am glad that I did because Masaaki Yuasa‘s Ride Your Wave was my favorite romantasy.
I could only imagine how difficult it must have been for Hinako, who practically grew up with love…

I loved the build-up of the story and how we got to witness vivid flashing back to the earlier 1666, revealing the events behind Sarah Fier’s “curse” through the eyes of Deena. Greed for power, intolerance for homoeroticism, and condemned lovers. The trilogy explores themes that are usually out of view in a subgenre of horror films where the plot revolves around mass killings. Slasher films by far have not peaked once again since the release of Fear Streets.
