A Simple Plan is my favourite Sam Raimi film. It’s story will have you on the edge of your seat, even if you’re shaking your head in frustration at many of the decisions made by the key characters. Raimi really paces this well and performances are great, with Billy Bob Thornton standing out. He has two scenes late in the film that will just break your heart.

Snow White 2025
A lot of people really seem to dislike this movie and I can’t say I fully get why. Full disclaimer: I don’t really love any of these Disney remakes. Some, like Beauty and the Beast, are handsomely produced but pointless. I give credit to Snow White for differentiating itself from the original. The 1937 version, Walt Disney’s first animated feature, is historic and wonderfully entertaining but it inarguably has problematic story beats.

The Thing 1982
Halloween will always be my favourite Carpenter movie but I think The Thing is his best work as a director. The paranoia, and the suspense that stems from it, is handled perfectly and when you mix in a great cast of character actors, a terrific Ennio Morricone score, and the disgusting Rob Bottin practical effects, you have one hell of a fun film.
