Soderbergh is a terrible fit for the source material (better or worse than he was for King of the Hill? Not sure…), but the talking head interviews at the beginning and inserted sparingly throughout really helped the film. They are perfectly distilled real horror stories told by regular people, and because they’re told by normal people, Gray’s incredible skill executing the monologue is elevated in contrast and helps you focus on his delivery and ignore a lot of the goofy staging.

There’s some stuff here, but never has a mood been more mismatched to an experience than mine today to watching this stupid bullshit. Second half is markedly better.
Surely we have hit the nadir of the homework phase of this Soderbergh filmography watch project.

Well, ok…So there’s a lot of silly shit in this thing, but the final set piece tipped the scales in its favor. Looking forward to enjoying it more upon rewatch when I can immediately follow it up with part two.
