There’s a great movie in here somewhere, which made it a frustrating viewing experience even though I did enjoy learning about this world (especially the Creepers) and some of the characters (the ones that weren’t just caricatures). Every scene was about twice as long as it needed to be and the pacing was glacial. There were about 5 scenes that felt like the final climax all in a row, so it ended up feeling like watching a movie with all…

Reading reviews, I hesitated to watch this for a long time because everyone only talked about how tough a viewing experience it is. Yes, it’s a film about abuse, trauma, shitty parents, broken people. But what surprised me was that it’s also a film about great friends. I had to force myself to finish this. Repetitive plot. Badly paced (really sagged in the middle with the repeated escape attempts). Boring, one-dimensional characters. Preachy. Questionable ethics. An interesting setup that is completely wasted. Does not earn its runtime at all. My mind was mostly occupied imagining better versions of the movie. I have zero interest in watching the sequel.

The best sci-fi films of the twenty-teens and probably further than that. A sprawling, visually stunning sequel to the classic Blade Runner that feels completely justified and emotionally satisfying. Overflowing with mood and human emotion. Unforgettable soundtrack from Hans Zimmer and co. Immaculate cinematography (truly an "every frame a painting" film) from the legendary Roger Deakins. Denis Villeneuve’s best.
