  This was an interesting one. Given Kore-eda’s repertoire, the themes and feel of the movie were nothing new. However, something that this film exceeds at is portraying mature nuance through its use of confliction.

  Scenes are simultaneously happy while also being gut-wrenchingly sad. The characters are broken and selfish beyond belief, but also the only ones you can trust. The smiles of the detectives are genuine, but their suits still make them cold and ignorant. You see hope for everything turning out fine, while knowing there was never a happily ever after in store.
