Perfect! Painfully romantic, alluringly voyeuristic, thrillingly violent. Unseen love envelops every image, like that of water developing film. Class antagonism and the superstructure’s coercive relationship on individuals playing out in Shakespearean terms. Is the violence here committed out of love or out of hate?  Image is the only objective truth. Miles Davis! 10/10 no notes.

“One of you once recalled I tried to enter the Ecole Normale before deciding on a law career. Well, this new Drummond affair is like a classical tragedy that will unfold over 24 hours.”

Sort of made In the Mood for Love feel more heartbreaking… interesting to see the shots and set designs he took inspiration from, but I feel like primarily I got to see the world (and maybe its true deficiencies) that Wong and his characters are so nostalgic for in In the Mood for Love. I would say required viewing if you’ve seen the film 5+ times like me

Two lonely people keeping each other warm. Dreams of houses with gardens, apartments for back home. Mainlanders turned Hongkongers. We need to stop fooling ourselves. The Statue of Liberty, unmoving but ephemeral, a symbol not of what has been found, but what has been lost. Some things in life you only need to learn once.
