  I couldn’t quite put my finger on what was winding me up so much about this while I was watching it - besides the obvious fact that it was aimless, clichéd misery-porn - but I think it’s the condescending attitude of “yes isn’t it sad that people really are like this, but they do have hearts” 

  Shane Meadows and Paddy Considine seem to equate brutal violence and intense displays of emotion with quality for some bizarre reason and I fucking hate it

  Halfway through this I'd already made my mind up that I really didn't like it - I couldn't settle into the story and had little to no interest in Teddy's character.

  Then the cave scene came - the stakes were raised (or were they?) and the rest is twisty history.

  A good exercise in sticking something out even if you're not crazy about it initially - don't judge until the credits roll.

  Okay yeah that was pretty scary.

  It really captures that feeling of being awake in the middle of the night when you’re a kid and being scared - not of any one thing in particular - just scared.

  The atmosphere it creates is effective but I spotted a piece of Lego that wouldn’t have been around in 1995 so - minus half a star.
