Conclave 2024
Conclave is a good production, the film looks fantastic, the performances are all at the level we expect from the heavy hitters in the cast, but if the movie centers on Catholicism, and specifically the election of a new pope, one would expect the filmmakers to not flub the theology. Alas, it is bad. Certainly, the film attempts a heartwarming message, but too many movies characterize the highest aim of the religious life through the "just be a good person"…

Salem's Lot 2024
Beautifully shot and some impressive staging in a few parts, but tries too hard to make this movie a Stranger Things episode but with vampires. The third act of this movie had no juice, and the ending was uneventful. Passable fare for October, but I'll forget it by next Halloween.

Genius 2016
Interesting adaptation, great cast, but falls victim to the "movies about authors must have excess voice-overs" trope. The novel is a different medium than movies, and there's no harm in exploring the character of Thomas Wolfe without the constant interpolation of his prose into the script. Fun, but flawed.
