The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie

Terrific. Every effort to put the Looney Toons on the big screen since the 1980s pales before this. I laughed hard enough to cry more than once, this is more in the spirit of 50s and 60s Daffy and Porky. Throw in the nods to The Thing, the 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and others and this film really hit for me.

Everything good about this movie is all Rachel Ziegler, who is an absolute gem here, with charisma to spare. This and the holdover songs from the original, solid.

The rest? The new songs are ridiculously generic and the dwarves (who are never identified as such) are animated in a style reminiscent of Shrek, a movie parodying the original Disney films that were far better than this. Gal Gadot is dull, the backstory is lame and mixing in Robin Hood mythos feels weird.

Kids will love it. I enjoyed more than I thought I would but not much more.

Elizabeth Banks is terrific, Lewis Pullman is loathsome, and Luis Gerardo Mendez continues to show a ton of versatility. I liked the ending but the film seems to waiver quite a bit when it comes to how smart Banks' Hope Goldman is. Her scene in the car with Nathan Fillion shows her to be far more astute and savvy then the rest of the movie does.

Once you realize that Bob Clark's Black Christmas is THE only GREAT Christmas horror movie, nothing compares. I love that this film notes the irony of Clark's A Christmas Story being a holiday classic, while THE BEST CHRISTMAS FILM HE EVER MADE is not as well known among the common folks.

This is fun. Animatronic Santa repurposed from military AI runs amock. Nothing special, just fun. Trippy seeing Abraham Benrubi, Kubiac from Park Lewis Can't Lose, as a legitimately frightening Santabot.
