Philadelphia 1993
This film never really explores the ideas it presents, rather touches upon them slightly and then abandons most of them. And as many people said, it is not a bold film but only a straight man’s take on a gay man’s story. It only exists because it was profitable for a large studio to make a film regarding the issue. So I was a little disappointed… and the editing sucks. But I can say the performances are (while cringe and Oscar-baity at times) mostly great.

The Substance 2024
Ironically, for a film called The Substance, it really lacks narrative substance and opts for an “in you face” style instead. And it falls flat with every message it tries to give. You can’t criticize male sexualization of women by shoving Margaret Qualley’s ass on the screen for almost a third of the runtime. I bet there are more reddit posts about this film’s nudity than there are for discussions about the film’s subject because it clearly fails at addressing the male audience it wants to provoke.
