I feel incredibly calm after watching this film. An experience of pure catharsis which has never seemed so unforced in any film to me before. Three chapters of a life fraught with the such acute torment leaves me feeling as though I have woken from a dream in which I was living as somebody else. This is a masterpiece of emotion and character transformation, a work of art in the truest sense in that it provokes deep emotion. Everything in this film is delivered through a window into a small world and yet is felt on some kind of universal level. Incredible.

Children of Men 2006
Previously a fan of Cuarón through films such as Y Tu Mama Tambien, this leaps to the front of his best films I've seen and becomes one of my favourite films period. Blue Ruin 2013
Grimy and at times harrowing, Blue Ruin captures the deeply rooted emotional torment experienced by a homeless man whose life is anchored in past trauma. Leaving the audience to piece together the cause of his tattered life within the opening scenes, the protagonist Dwight embarks on a blood stained journey of redemption and revenge in an almost Wild West style fashion as he tears and shoots his way through the undergrowth of a pretty much nameless American landscape. I enjoyed the use of eponymous blue vehicle and it's link to Dwight throughout the movie, clever film-making within a genre which is perhaps over-done these days.

Dredd 2012
Having heard and seen mixed reports on this remake of an icon, Dredd is undeniable comic fiction gold. I think intentionally OTT (as all films in this genre must be I believe), Dredd puts together black humour and a zealous amount of ultra-violence to keep the audience pinned at all times. Easy to follow, and with an original and interesting sci-fi setting, I'd recommend Dredd to anyone in need of an action indulgence or to remind you that Sylvester Stallone didn't totally murder the this character.
