Massive bearded Joker brains nonces with hammer while descending into madness. Phoenix’s hulking physicality, worlds away from his more recent roles, is electrifying — all the more impressive for betraying such profound inner vulnerability. Greenwood’s score is thrilling as always; at times frantic and foreboding, at others dappled and heartfelt and hopeful.
Lynne Ramsay described this film as “experiential” and she would know. It’s a bloody walk through broken glass with a traumatised brute who’ll win your heart, and I can’t praise it enough. A cinematic gem.

Midsommar has nothing very groundbreaking to say, but it doesn’t have to — this is a simple yet compelling human story told through the medium of folk horror at its most grandiose, and it gets the balance just right. You’ll feel everything Dani feels; it’s your shocking, perverse, triumphant journey as much as hers.
