I hadn’t quite remembered the second film as well as I had the first. I still do really think these movies as a whole are phenomenal to watch in one big sitting but there’s one ‘chapter’ that I start to lose my suspension of disbelief near the end. Everything else still works so nicely with the first part, but it becomes somewhat pulp. I don't know, I really hate to criticize this second half too harshly because I still think it’s paramount to reach the complete ending of both of these two films; the first part is just so astounding it’s hard not to draw comparisons.
Rewatching this film between such different stages of my life is seeing it newly. At two different crossroads, it means I have a different network of synapses in my brain, of nerves in my chest, for this film to tug at. To tear. I had thought I healed from the first time seeing this film but I am still as clueless, as lost, as vulnerable to this film than I had been when I had first watched before my foray…
For one of the first films in a long time to make me jump - and fully by surprise in the first 15 minutes of the film - I was ready for a Silence of the Lambs type something with an equally compelling main character. But as the film went on and abandoned hope in the titular villain, discarded for dried out a Satanic Panic subplot that completely derails the film halfway through with blasé red herrings and cookie-cutter’ clues’…
