I remember this being the most depressive film ever when I first saw it in high school. Just sat in silence at the end.
It’s lost a little bit of that impact 20 years later. But it still has some phenomenal acting, inventive cinematography, and intense sequences. But it also felt a lot more campy this time around.
Still, this is the body horror movie The Substance wishes it could be.
Did David Lynch create the pretentious student film or is it just coincidence that so many pretentious student films look like this?
Watched Schindlers List last month which opened with the mass deportation of Jews from their homes into the Karkow ghetto before its liquidation. Their jobs, livelihoods and identities are slowly extinguished.
Ironic to watch these eerily similar scenes play out in this documentary. The victims are now the perpetrators of their own horrors. “History does not repeat itself, but it often rhymes.”
Ironically this film is more about spectacle than substance.
Got beat over the head with the film’s very simple message. It’s not as complex as it thinks it is. At the end I wondered if this film had anything original to say.
There were so many logic and story issues which further brought it down. It couldn’t even adhere to the rules it created.
Good acting and great production design though.
