Film adaptations that use (mostly) unaltered scripts from their stage counterparts are always at a bit of a disadvantage. The flamboyant gestures, big emotions, and lengthy monologues that are critical to reaching an audience in a live-setting may come off as melodramatic in the far more intimate medium of film.
