    Mickey 17

    ★★★

Mickey 17 can be subjected to much scrutiny under a microscope, but contains a number of enjoyable elements— primarily extracted from its fun sci-fi premise. While the film has some interesting or entertaining scenes, others feel boring and lacking in depth. However, a more consistent category is the film’s acting; the performances are all a delight to watch, even if the characters aren’t particularly interesting or defined. Another thing to note is that the film’s class satire is actually rather fun, as it is quite on-the-nose but never preachy— clearly set up for some old-fashioned, nondescript lampooning.

    ★★½

Writer/director Jesse Eisenberg seemed real eager to show off his feet in this one…

A Real Pain possesses a heartfelt story at its core, but doesn’t exactly play out to its full potential. I found the musical score to be distracting and irritating, and didn’t sense its emotional connection to the subject matter. I think Benji’s character annoyed me a little more than he was intended to, but a good performance by Kieran Culkan nonetheless.

The problems lie in the film’s attempt to portray reality. Falsely— and rather foolishly— the film’s bias is clear from the beginning and makes no attempt at representing a real discussion of apologetics. It also establishes a false victim mentality and makes a number of outrageous implications about the university system. None…

    Conclave

    ★★★½

Conclave is a tense political drama that investigates the quite unsurprising corruption of Catholic ecclesiastical authority. Despite a somewhat lacklustre conclusion, the narrative’s pursuit of the truth amid a wake of lies and deceptions will keep you on the edge of your seat.
