Feels a little bit like a music video that went on too long - Melanie Martinez meets Stepford Wives. Could definitely be the right dystopian color-fest for someone. But it felt flat in the end in terms of both characters and setting.
"Oh, maybe it's like Creature from the Black Lagoon," I thought. Dear Reader, it was not, in fact, like Creature from the Black Lagoon. My bad. Sometimes you should read what's on the tin.
However, do I regret watching it? No.
I went in completely blind and while it's hokey (almost every rubbery minute of it), there's still something fun here. It's the type of movie I'd recommend watching with some good humored friends (maybe over a drink or two). I mean, think of all the Shrek jokes you could make.
The Devil's Child has some gorgeous shots, an engaging premise, and a genuinely interesting atmosphere - somewhat mystical, somewhat updated gothic. And the two main characters are enjoyable to watch. Dwayne, played by Marvens Passiano, was endearing and sympathetic, and so was Cherry, played by Maria Camila Perez. Although the latter felt a little stunted, but I'm willing to bank on that being more of a script issue than the actress.
