Yeelen is one of those few movies that feels so special and different from anything you've ever seen that it's impossible not to appreciate it. This uniqueness of course comes from the movie being set in 13th century (presumably) in midst of West Africa and its Mali Empire. Also completely shot in their own languages Bambara and Fula, along with their own traditions of those times.
I'm always interested in movies that can show me a new insight into cultures…

Cinematography is something I cared a lot when first getting into movies. Two of my most loved movies in that aspect are The Fall and Once Upon a Time in the West. And El Topo falls just somewhere in middle of those two magnificent achievements. It offers surrealist images of the first and epic deserts of the latter.
