So much missed potential here—a great cast doing what they can with a story that isn’t doesn’t exist beyond the film’s synopsis, a family drama without any sense of family, but above all, a musical without any memorable songs.
I can’t remember where I heard it, but there’s an idea that whenever a character in a musical sings, it should be because they’re trying to express an emotion that they can’t express through words alone. But at every point in this film where it feels like that could be the case for a character, the music doesn’t rise meet to meet that moment.
