    Summer of 84

    ★★★½

Despite its small budget and modest ambitions, Summer of 84 is a solid entry in the 'teens-suspect-something-sinister-in-suburbia' subgenre. Released in close proximity to similarly themed films like The Clovehitch Killer and Super Dark Times at the height of 80's nostalgia that fueled monster hits like Stranger Things or It, (not to mention the obvious comparisons to serial killer-next-door-thrillers like Rear Window or Disturbia), Summer of 84 fights an uphill battle to strive for originality. The characters and location are well…

    The Menu

    ★★★★

The Menu is a deliciously deranged satire of consumerism and classism. It’s social commentary is broad yet pointed, and it manages to deliver its message clearly and concisely without talking down to its audience. Ralph Fiennes delivers another iconic villainous performance, capping a career full of them. And while we’ve been inundated with ‘eat the rich’ contemptuous dark comedies over the last few years, The Menu feels a bit more polished and nuanced than many of its counterparts. Equally shocking and hilarious, this is one of the most entertaining and surprising films of 2022.

    Weird: The Al Yankovic Story

    ★★★½

Daniel Radcliffe delivers one of the best performances of his career in this scattershot parody of biopics. This comedy eschews the traditions of the genre by leaning heavily into farce. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story feels like Walk Hard if it were penned by The Lonely Island. While it may not hit the gloriously gonzo highs of The Dewey Cox Story or Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, it’s a loving ode to those uninterested in the status quo- no matter how specific and niche their interests are. Greatly enhanced by some killer cameos and its blatant disregard for separating fact from fiction.

  • Deadstream

    Deadstream

    ★★★

A clever horror comedy that utilizes the limitations  of the found footage format far better than most in this well-worn sub genre. Deadstream announces the arrival of an eccentrically talented writer-director duo in Joseph & Vanessa Winter. This haunted house sendup of internet cancel culture & influencer idiocy is a prime example of filmmakers using every tool in the box on a micro budget. While the laughs and scares are intermittent, the creativity on display here is evident throughout.
