I genuinely cannot think of any other film that so masterfully combines the visceral depths of US racism and the creative artistry of images and sounds. The alternating POV might put some off, but I thought it was genius. This film will linger.
"Hey man, it's been a while. Why don't we go for a hike? I know this great place." The most basic premise. A familiar set up. We step into a moment in these two men's lives. A reunion of sorts. I suppose. We are given a couple of pieces of context but basically no back stories are forthcoming. And it's fine. It's more than fine. Lucy the dog (who I love) knows much more than we do. And it's really…
Often films begin with sappy epigraphs. Not this one - "behind mountains are mountains". Makes a whole lot of literal sense in Haiti and, for different reasons, in Little Haiti, Miami or, for that matter, so many other local communities losing ground to neolib development. An increasing tension at multiple scales, this film draws one in and gives the viewer a rare peek into this side of Miami. The tender father-son chat towards the end of the film somehow worked for me and the musical score was clever and effective. All in all, a well-told story of migration, urbanization, family and inter-generational challenges.
The writer/director Ousmane Sembene's film debut is stark. Even watching it almost 60 years after it was released, one can appreciate the tension building in the final 20-30minutes of the film. The lingerings of colonialism, the empty promises, the dreamscapes of decolonization, the loss of self all around. The final scene with the boy who dons the mask and follows the "patron" out of Diouana's family neighborhood in Dakar is genius.
