I appreciated its depiction of the idea that there are things we can tolerate alone that we cannot abide when someone we love is there to witness it. László endures, even enjoys, being Van Buren’s pet for a time, but when Erzsébet arrives it’s quickly revealed for what it actually is. I’ve always felt i suffer better, more economically, alone.
