I wouldn't say this was a great play, and indeed I really took against it at first, but on reflection, following deeper viewing, it's very watchable, especially due to some fine performances. While I maintain it's necessary for writers to have freedom to write about places and people they have no personal connection with, I'd say this probably loses out for being (unless I'm mistaken) an outsider's view compared with Jim Allen in 'The Spongers' or any of Peter McDougall's Greenock Plays for Today. Viewed this at the Tyneside Cinema with my Dad. Strong film, near Leigh's incisive humanistic best. Pansy's seemingly bloody-minded irascible invective became contextualised, and deeply moving. A personal, domestic, familial story in its major outline, but which also cast a deep shadow in terms of our loneliness and mental health. This was brilliantly juxtaposed with Pansy's sister's family's friendly ebullience.

Miss Marple: A Caribbean Mystery 1989
Pleasence is great and works ably with Hickson, expanding on some of his characteristics as mercurial and hearty. He also does some fine eccentric laughing. As a crime story and film this Barbados-shot effort does drag and doesn't have much that is compelling. Christopher Petit should've been allowed to stay with arty Eurocentric road movies... My wife said that it was "more convoluted than usual" and she loves this particular Marple series.
