YOU HAVE TWINS?! Good farce with a bunch of dope one-liners and some good physical comedy.

Inherent Vice 2014
Paul Thomas Anderson manages to make an adaptation of Pynchon that both evokes the feeling of his prose and literally represents the plot, a project previously thought impossible. Anderson masterfully draws out the human experience that detractors often claim does not exist in Pynchon's writing, and portrays with clarity the horror of being a human among so many machines, so many institutions. Meanwhile the film itself inhabits a unique place in the noir canon alongside The Long Goodbye and other alternative detective stories. I seriously doubt Pynchon will ever be adapted so well ever again.

The Long Goodbye 1973
Altman's bizarre, unique, meandering style is perfect for a detective story where the truth matters so little and success is barely different from failure. The ultimate nihilist mystery, to me it combines with Chinatown and Inherent Vice to create a perfect map of all the best parts of neo-noir. Elliot Gould owns the screen both in close-up and in wide shot. The whole cast is that uncanny combination of unnatural and human that Altman nails so well.
Come for the incredible storytelling, stay for Arnold Schwarzenegger's first screen appearance.
