For a movie with so much spectacle, incredible set design, and wonderful performances, it seems to suffer from its scale somewhat as well. Two and a half hours is quite long for a silent film (I pray for when I get to Napoleon), and the different pacing of the time certainly doesn't help. Perhaps it's my ignorance, but the film does drag a little bit, with the final act especially having scenes that take just a bit too long. Nonetheless…

A striking film, despite its simplicity, backed up by a stunning performance. Hard to say anything that hasn't already been said, but what I will say is that, despite the film being mostly dialogue and interrogation of some kind, it goes by surprisingly quickly, managing to captivate my attention for the majority. There is no one who tells the story of a once powerful, but now broken, man like Scorsese does. Admittedly, this affair is not nearly as subtle in its execution as The Irishman, a good chunk of which is spent with Frank Sheeran contemplating his life more than reliving it. Have to admit this was not exactly my type of film, but it was a powerful and eminently relatable look into the desperation of post-war Italy. Similar in nature to the looks into post-war Japan from Ozu, but from a very different perspective. Arguably not very much occurs in this movie, but the beautiful visuals and emotional performances brought forth by De Sica tell a concise but still very rich story. The ending in particular brings everything full circle, and makes the experiences of our characters easy to empathize with despite us maybe being in a very different place.
